2023 Visit & Field Trip Programme

The 2023 Visit & Field Trip Programme is currently under discussion. Details will be published as they become available.

There may be some of several conditions applied to participation in these events, as follows:-

1.       Booking in advance may be required as numbers may be limited for various reasons.

2.       If, on the day before the proposed event, the weather forecast is unfavourable  the event may be cancelled. For this reason contact telephone number will be required for every participant.

3.       You will be responsible for your own safety, although no significant hazards are expected – we will be staying in areas with public access.

To book, please email Melinda Bell, Field Trip Coordinator, at melinda97bell@gmail.com. These will, of course, usually be free events, but only available to Blackfordby Wildlife Group group members.

Joining instructions will be sent nearer the time to those who have booked.

Field Visit to Ashby Canal, near Snarestone. Tuesday, 20th June at 10.30

Leader:- Richard Pegler

Objective:- Primarily to look for the very localised White-legged Damselfly in one of its strongholds. Other damselflies, and possibly dragonflies, will also be sought – and any other wildlife that may present itself.

Dress:- We will be using the canal towpath, so walking shoes will be sufficient footwear.

Getting there:- We shall meet up at Gopsall Wharf, near Snarestone. To get there, take the B4116 Measham Road/Ashby Road that passes by the western edge of Snarestone. Having passed Snarestone, there is a straight stretch of road where the 40 limit ends. Towards the end of the straight stretch of road, just after the SLOW sign on your side of the road, there is a turning to the left, before the road bends gently to the right. Take this left turn. If you pass a sign on the right to Culloden Farm and Dreamy Cow ice cream, you have gone too far and missed the turn!

The left turn will take you down a narrow pot-holed lane with passing places. Just before you get to a bridge (over the canal) there is a car park on the right, beside the canal. We’ll meet there.

Weather:- The visit is very much dependent on the weather. There is little point (from my point of view anyway!) in the visit if it is cold, windy, or wet. If the weather looks dubious I will cancel the visit and try and arrange if for another day. For this reason, I ask that you email me (richard@peglermail.co.uk) with your telephone number so that I can contact you, should I feel it necessary to cancel – a decision will be made the evening beforehand, based on the weather forecast.

Please Note: Visit Postponed to a date to be announced, due to poor weather
